Results Analysis

With the LGA1366 thermal test rig, the Freedom Tower did a respectable job of cooling the napalm-like temperatures of our overclocked Core i7-965 Extreme Edition CPU, holding it to a delta T of 48˚C. This is the same temperature as that produced by the Titan Fenrir, on its low fan speed setting.

If you can stand the extra noise, you can increase the fan speed of the Titan’s fan to unlock another 4˚C of cooling, a trick that the Freedom Tower doesn’t have up its heatpipes. However, the Freedom Tower was as quiet as the Fenrir on its lowest fan setting in all four tests, whether the system was idle or under load.

Bolting the cooler in the LGA775 rig notched up another excellent result for the Freedom Tower. The delta T of 40˚C is between the high and low fan speed delta T temperatures of the Titan Fenrir (38˚C and 42˚C respectively).

The Akasa wasn’t as well suited for modern AMD boards, but it didn’t fall off the wagon entirely. Firing up Prime95 on our overclocked Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition saw the delta T rise to 40˚C.The Titan will manage 3˚C cooler than this with its fan speed on low.

Conclusion

Once the easy installation was complete, we weren’t let down by the Freedom Tower’s cooling prowess. If you’re looking for a new cooler for your AMD rig, the Titan Fenrir is a better bet, but for all the Intel sockets, the Freedom Tower was very good. It was as quiet as the Fenrir while delivering better cooling and easier mounting. If you want a cheap upgrade for your current Core 2 or LGA1366 Core i7 rig, the Freedom Tower is a sound choice.
